For the contextual studies portion of our course we are required to show some of our work and relate it to an artist who produces work that we can see similarity's in, or admire or gain inspiration from. instead of picking just one i thought i would use this opportunity to look at a few different artists who fit the criteria. The first artist i am going to look at is Simon Starling.
Simon Starling is best known for his turner prize winning "Shedboatshed (Mobile Architecture No 2)" From 2005 and it does sum up how, in many cases this artist work, it examines the act of the journey, and the idea of transportation. It is a exploration of this theme that runs deeply through his work with other pieces such as Tabernas Desert Run where Starling created a motorized bicycle that's only emission was water, using the water created during the trip he painted a watercolour of a cactus.
These ideas, not overly complicated but beautifully completed leave us the viewer looking at artefacts from theses journeys, when viewing, for example, "shedboatshed" in a gallery , you only see the end result, a slightly strangely built barn/shed but by seeing it you are aware of the journey it has been through and it is that i think, that makes his work so brilliant
